Dear Corpus Christi,
With the feast of St. Francis of Assisi just passed, so it may be a good moment to reflect on what the Pope has called “care for our common home.” The current Francis helpfully reframes the environmental cause as one steeped in matters of economic justice. This Sunday’s Gospel features Jesus’ admonition to sell possessions and give to the poor. While terms like “redistribution” might discomfort (perhaps they should), it is difficult to read Scripture at any length and not come away with the message that the gift of creation and its resources are not given to few but are offered to all.
Keep discerning and praying about what, how, and how much we consume, what a more just and sustainable world might look like, and the roles each of has in bringing it about.
